About Us

Newton Stewart Walking Festival Committee

Newton Stewart Walking Festival is run by a committee of volunteers who share an enthusiasm and love for Galloway and the great walking experiences it offers. WalkFest started in 2003 with a modest week-end programme of eight walks in around Newton Stewart. By 2008 it had grown to a week-long festival consisting of over 30 events, including challenging hill routes, coastal walks and informative evening events. The festival is still centred on the town of Newton Stewart but we offer walks throughout the Galloway Hills and along the Solway Coast. Several of the committee have been involved from the very start and the support and involvement of Galloway Mountain Rescue Team has been a constant strength. In recent years we have also enjoyed considerable support from Wigtownshire Ramblers. Enthusiasm and commitment has never been a problem - we love coming up with new routes and fresh ideas. We recently won a VisitScotland Thistle Award for the best nature-based attraction in our region, but our real reward is in welcoming back year after year walkers from all parts of the country and helping local people to enjoy the countryside on their doorstep.  Galloway is gaining recognition as a destination for walkers at all seasons and we hope that we and our many supporters have helped to make this happen.    We look forward to welcoming you in May.
